Passage: 2 Corinthians 8:2-12

If your life story was told through your checking/debit account, what would people find? God wants generosity to be the norm for all His children. How does God want to multiply generosity in us?

Multiplied Generosity

Pastor Tom Lundeen

...having  church with multiple campuses while being one family is called multisite.

Riverside Church exists to reach  and help them to become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

Note Matthew 6:21

A life story could be written from a checking account. It reflects your goals, priorities, convictions, relationships, and even the use of your time. A person who has been a Christian for a short time can  prayer, Bible study...and going to church, but he can't  what his bank account reveals. Maybe that is why so many of us are so  about our personal finances. (Ron Blue)

It's why  talked more about money and things than any other topic.

God wants generosity to be the  for all of His children.

How does God want to multiply generosity in us?

1. By His Grace  My Heart (note 2 Corinthians 8:1)

Apart from God's grace, we're  self-centered, proud, selfish people.

A. Grace-inspired giving is unaffected by  (note 2 Corinthians 8:2) - note Philippians 1:27-29; 1 Thessalonians 1:6; 2 Thessalonians 1:4)...grace-inspired giving isn't dependent on good circumstances and positive  conditions.

B. Grace-inspired giving is  and spontaneous (note 2 Corinthians 8:3-4) - note Acts 11:29-30. Their giving was expressed in two biblical forms:

i.  giving (note 2 Corinthians 8:3, 5-10; 1 Corinthians 16:1-2).

ii.  giving (note 2 Corinthians 8:3).

C. Grace-inspired giving is God- (note 2 Corinthians 8:5) - Consecration to God  contributions. (King)

D. Grace-inspired giving is  for Jesus followers (note 2 Corinthians 8:7)

2. By Making  Our Motivation

Generosity flows out of genuine  (note 2 Corinthians 8:8).

Jesus Himself is our example of what generosity really looks like (note 2 Corinthians 8:9; Philippians 2:7-8).

Jesus  our debt of sin and paid for it on the cross.

If this love of Christ, so magnanimous in its motive and so self-sacrificing in its execution, is an  force in the believers' heart, how unnecessary, the apostle implies, any command to practice "giving" ought to be. What, without that love, might seem a  moral duty has been transformed by it into a joyous privilege. (Tasker)

Everything we do for Jesus, including our giving, will be all the more positive and meaningful when our motivation isn't some sort of  obligation, burdensome duty to carry out, but instead it's an expression of gratitude to God for His incredible love for us (note

2 Corinthians 9:11-12).

What does it mean for Riverside to MULTIPLY?:
  • We are encouraged to  in the grace of giving (note 2 Corinthians 9:6-7).
  • Barna survey = % of US adults say they're completely or somewhat generous; but the average American gives just % of their income to charity; Dunning-Kruger effect = tendency for people to  their performance).
  • Is the act of giving a joyful privilege for us, or a  we try to avoid?
  • Serious, growing, Spirit-filled followers of Jesus aren't offended, , or uncomfortable when encouraged to give generously to God's work.
  • Note Matthew 6:21
  • People who give to the Church start to love the Church. People who give to help people come to Christ to start to care about people coming to Christ. People who give to God find their  and thoughts on God and godly things. (Strand)
