Passage: Mark 6:7-31

The concept of a day of rest has often been misunderstood and twisted by people. Even Jesus realized that no one can sustain a 24/7 work and activity lifestyle. What can we learn from Jesus to move from stress to rest?

Call A Timeout!

Pastor Tom Lundeen

We need to keep reminding ourselves that Jesus experienced incredible levels of stress throughout every week of His  life.

So when you feel , know Jesus understands what you're experiencing.

Today we're going to see another way Jesus dealt with stress...

1.

Note Mark 6:7, 30-31

It would be easy to assume that Jesus and His disciples should never take a day off, much less even an  lunch hour!

But Jesus realized no one can  a 24/7 work/activity lifestyle.

They needed a .

They needed some time with nothing on the  (note Mark 6:32).

One of the ways Jesus dealt with stress (remember Hebrews 4:15) is because He knew He needed times of rest...

2. Rest is  Idea

Rest, relaxation, and recreation in each of our lives isn't .

Almighty God established this  when He created the world (note Genesis 2:2).

God didn't rest because He was  from creating everything... (note Isaiah 40:28).

He established the principle of a day of rest not for His sake, but for  (note Exodus 20:8-11).

The concept of a day of rest has often been misunderstood and  by people.

In fact, one of Jesus' most frequent  with the religious leaders was about God's command for a day of rest.

Note Mark 2:24; John 5:10; Luke 13:14; Mark 3:2

Jesus had to keep reminding them of God's  for the day of rest, and who is in charge of the Sabbath day (note Mark 2:23-28).

God knows that our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual constitution demands  breaks. (Warren)

3. God is Not Anti-

Note Matthew 9:9-15; 11:19

Jesus, though He was God in human flesh, was also fully human, so He experienced all of life and .

He was a man of  (note Isaiah 53:3; Luke 19:41; John 1:10-11).

But He was also full of  (note Luke 10:21; John 15:11; 17:13).

Note Acts 14:17; Psalm 85:12a; James 1:17; 1 Timothy 6:17

is the key when it comes to experiencing less stress and more rest.

We need to work hard (work is not a  word)...

But we also need time to rest, unwind, , have a hobby/activity you enjoy, and sometimes relax and do nothing.

Too much of either one isn't .

But for many of us, rest, relaxation, and recreation are either  concepts or practiced so  that we keep asking for and receiving more pressure, more tension, more exhaustion, more stress, and less rest.

From Stress to Rest in 2023:

  • God knows what you , and wants you to experience times of rest and recreation.
  • Rest is also not a  word.
  • Note John 10:10
